Crafting – Corinthian Granite Stone Chimney

Massachusetts stone masonry is alive and well! This project features a full stone woodstove chimney crafted from Corinthian Granite. It was a complete makeover, transforming a standard basement setup into a high-end masonry centerpiece.

Building a Custom Woodstove Chimney

Every great project starts with a solid foundation. In this case, we began with the basement chimney for the woodstove, moving the stove pipe over as much as possible to optimize the layout before starting the stone facade on the first floor.

Crafting with Corinthian Granite

The first floor was in need of a stone makeover, and Corinthian Granite was exactly what the doctor ordered. We started with the largest rocks at the base—a good reminder that even masons get old, so we move the heavy stuff first! As the progress continued, the natural character of the granite really began to show.

Creative Problem Solving: Recessed Granite Shelves

During the brainstorming phase, the homeowners mentioned they would love some type of shelf. We had a few spatial challenges: a shelf on the front would interfere with the woodstove, and a shelf on the right side would be in a high-traffic area where people might bump into it. After sleeping on it, I came up with a solution: Recessed Granite “Windows.”

These recessed nooks provide the storage space the homeowners wanted without protruding into the walking path. They were an instant hit and add a unique architectural detail to the stone chimney.

The Finished Custom Stone Chimney

After a few more days of careful setting and a final wash down, the project was complete. This custom stone chimney is now a durable, beautiful focal point that will last for generations.
