There Are Two Ways To Build A Brick Patio
There are really only two ways to build a brick patio on your property. Your intended use of the patio and your budget will help dictate which way your new brick patio should be constructed.
Flexible Pavement Brick Patios
Flexible pavement is generally considered the quickest and easiest method to construct a brick patio. You may also know this as the dry-laid method. The dry-laid method consists of laying the brick or pavers directly on top of a flat and level bed made with tightly compacted sand or crushed stone or layers of both. The bricks or pavers are then butted tightly together and additional sand can then be swept across the patio so it settles between all of the joints. Should you ever want to alter the look of your patio or replace a paver or two this method uses no mortar so it's very easy to change or move bricks in the future. The downside... These types of patios can be affected by errosion, ground movement and the freeze/thaw cycles we have here in Massachusetts.
Mortared Pavement Brick Patios
Mortared pavement patios are your permanent patio. If properly prepared and laid down a mortared brick patio could last for more than a century. The surface will not have has many small imperfections as a flexible brick patio but it also will take considerable more time to construct. With a mortared brick patio we need to first lay down a crushed-stone base that is then topped with a several inch thick concrete slab. Once the concrete cures we have a solid foundation to continue building the patio on. The bricks or pavers are pressed into a 3/8" - 3/4" mortar bed that is trowled by hand onto the slab. The spaces between the bricks and/or pavers are then filled with Mortar. This method of brick patio construction is considered the "best" way to build a brick structure that will stand the test of time.
